The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), opened in October 1991, comprises four Schools: Science, Engineering, Business & Management, and Humanities & Social Science. The University's mission is to advance larning and scholarship; to promote research, development, and entrepreneurship, and to contribute to the region's economic and social well-being. Current student enrolment is around 7,000 full-time equivalent at undergraudate and postgraudate levels.

The School of Humanities and Social Science comprises two divisions - the Division of Humanities and the Division of Social Science. Although the School does not offer undergraduate degrees, both divisions offer postgraduate studies leading to master's and doctoral degrees. The range of specializations includes literature, linguistics, history, anthropology, philosophy, religions, political science, economics, sociology, psychology, geography, as well as the societal implications of science and technology. a significant focus of research interest is on studies relating to Greater China area.

The Dean of the Dean of School is an executive and faculty appointment, and is a member of the senior administrative team of the University. The appointee is expected to play a leading role in effecting the academic objectives of the School, and in guiding the School in its diverse activities including program developments, research directors, and academic partnership and linkages. Applicants should be distinguished scholars in humanities or social sciences with ample relevant experiences in university administration at the senior level.

Salary and benefits will be competitive. Concurrent with a professorial appointment, the initial appointment as Dean, expected to start 1 July 2004, will normally be for a term of 3 years.
